Hawaiian Airlines Relocates Terminals At LAX & New York JFK Airport (2025)

Following its recent merger into the Alaska Air Group, Hawaiian Airlines has been relocating terminals at some of the major hub airports on the US mainland. This will allow it to better align with the operations of Alaska Airlines, as well as offering improved integration in terms of onward connections with the latter carrier's oneworldalliance partners. The airports in question are located all across the US.

Indeed, from Los Angeles on the West Coast of the United States of America to New York City on the East Coast, Hawaiian Airlines has been working diligently to optimize its respective terminal relocations. At larger hub airports, this has the potential to be something of a lengthy process, with Alaska Airlines also needing to transition from its current locations to new terminals to consolidated operations.

A New Home In New York

Among the most notable hub facilities where Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines are consolidating their operations is New York JFK Airport. As announced yesterday by Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian has now begun full-scale operations from Terminal 8 at JFK, having transitioned from Terminal 4. This was a gradual process, with certain flights using Terminal 8 as early as the end of last month.

A key benefit of this move will be the interconnectivity that it offers with Alaska Airlines' oneworld alliance partners such as American Airlines and British Airways, which also call Terminal 8 their home at New York JFK Airport. Alaska Airlinesitself will also need to move from Terminal 7, with this occurring by October. As a result, first class passengers will be able to use American Airlines' lounges at JFK.

"The new long-term lease at Terminal 8 and our resulting move strengthen our commitment to enhancing the guest experience, improving employee spaces, and driving better economic outcomes for our JFK operation. Terminal 8 is home to American Airlines, our long-standing oneworld partner, and this move demonstrates our shared commitment to delivering seamless connectivity for our guests." - Shane Jones, SVP of Fleet, Revenue Products & Real Estate at Alaska Airlines

Easier Access In Los Angeles

Over on the other side of the country, Hawaiian Airlines has also found itself a new home at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Indeed, as of yesterday, the carrier has moved its check-in facilities to Terminal 6 at the Californian hub, where it will operate alongside Alaska Airlines. As the latter carrier notes, this will "offer guests quicker and easier access between gates, counters, and baggage claim."

According to Hawaiian news outlet KHON2, this is far from Hawaiian Airlines' only terminal move at Los Angeles International Airport in recent years. Indeed, the publication notes that, having previously been based out of Terminal 5 at the West Coast facility, 2021 saw the carrier move to Terminal B. Construction projects at Los Angeles International Airport were reportedly the reason behind this move.

This shift is said to have been unpopular with Hawaiian Airlines' passengers in Los Angeles, with Terminal B having required passengers to make, as KHON2 puts it, "a brisk 20 to 30 minute walk from TSA." Now, however, passengers are welcoming the easier access provided by Terminal 6, with far fewer steps required. This, along with the fact that Alaska Airlines also uses Terminal 6, makes for a perfect match.

According to current scheduling data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, Hawaiian Airlines only operates one flight a day in each direction to and from New York JFK Airport. This route originates at its main hub in Honolulu (HNL), with its aircraft of choice being AirbusA330 and Boeing787 jets. Generally speaking, the former of these accounts for around two-thirds of the flights.

Los Angeles, on the other hand, is a far more operationally significant destination for Hawaiian Airlines, with 400 of the carrier's flights scheduled to or from the facility this month. As well as flying either three or four times a day from Honolulu, Los Angeles also sees daily Hawaiian Airlines rotations from Kona (KOA), Lihue (LIH), and Maui (OGG), underlining its importance as a destination.
