Vizsla mix dogs are often found at shelters and Vizsla rescues and some Vizsla mixes are deliberately bred.

But while Vizsla mixed breeds can make great pets it can be tricky to know what their size or temperament will be. So if you are considering a Vizsla mix puppy or a rescue Vizsla mix dog, it is a good idea to find out as much as you can.

So in this guide we take a look at some of the more common Vizsla cross breeds along with their likely personality traits, size and exercise needs to help you make the right choice and know more about your pup.

About Vizsla Mixes

Hungarian Vizslas are a purebred dog that has been selectively bred over many decades according to the Vizsla breed standard.

The physical traits, health and temperament of pure bred Vizsla dogs from reputable breeders are predictable and in many ways repeatable.

But in the canine world mixed breed dogs are inevitable and so naturally there is a wide variety of Vizsla mixes.

These dogs are often found at Dog Shelters and Vizsla Rescue Centers. Some are the result of accidental litters of Vizsla mix puppies and others are hybrid dogs (also called Designer Dogs) that are deliberately bred for a purpose.

Historically people have mixed different dog breeds to enhance their working purpose. But in recent times it has also become popular to mix pure breed dogs simply for their looks.

This presents a challenge to future dog owners as there is much more genetic variability in mixed breed dogs than pure breeds. And they often sell for as much if not more than purebred dogs.

Unfortunately this often results in dogs being given up to shelters as their size, energy level and temperament are unknown as puppies.

Our purpose in this guide is to describe common Vizsla mix dog breeds to help those who are adopting Vizsla rescues or buying a Vizsla mix puppy from an unplanned litter.

Hopefully knowing their likely size, energy and temperament will help determine their suitability for your lifestyle and family.

Tips For Assessing Vizsla Mixed Breeds

As every Vizsla mixed dog will have a unique personality and traits, how can you get a better idea of the likely characteristics of your dog? Here are three options.

• Meet the parents: The most ideal situation is where both parents are known. This is most common in the case of an accidental litter in a single home. Try and visit the dame and sire as this will give you a very good idea of the likely size, personality and traits your pup will inherit.

• Breed Standards: Go to the AKC or official Club website for each of the two purebred dogs and read the breed standards. This will help you understand the physical and emotional traits of each breed.

• DNA Test: The best way to know for sure what breeds your dog is made up of is to buy a DNA test kit.

Dog Breed DNA Tests

If you have a Vizsla rescue and don’t know what Vizsla mix your pup is, the best way to know for sure is to send off a DNA test.

There are home kits available. You simply collect a sample from your dog and send if off for analysis. They screen your pup’s DNA against a large database to help identify their genetic makeup and health risks.

One of the best of these tests is the Embark Breed and Health Kit. The results can’t be 100% guaranteed, but it is by far the best way to understand the genetic makeup of your cross breed dog.

Hungarian Vizsla Characteristics

So before we hop into all the different Vizsla mixes, let’s take a quick look at the traits of the purebred Hungarian Vizsla.

Hungarian Vizslas are an elegant gundog hailing from Hungary in Eastern Europe. They were bred to work closely with their owner to hunt and retrieve small game.

They are a lean, athletic and energetic medium sized dog with large floppy ears and a smooth short coat in a single golden rust color.

In terms of personality Vizslas are friendly, sensitive, gentle, loving and loyal. They are pretty needy and need a lot of emotional attention plus at least an hour of daily exercise.

Highly in tune with their owners, they are not particularly independent dogs and are happiest when spending time with (or on) their owners.

So now we know what Vizslas are like, let’s take a look at some of the most common and interesting Hungarian Vizsla mix breeds you may come across.

12 Vizsla Mix Breeds Explained

1. Vizsla Lab Mix (Vizslador)

Perhaps the most common and well known of the Hungarian Vizsla mixes is the Vizsla Lab mix.

The combination of America’s favorite dog, the Labrador Retriever, with the Vizsla is a popular Vizsla cross and often a good one thanks to the friendly temperament, high intelligence and trainability of both breeds.

Both purebred dogs are medium in size, with a short coat and floppy ears. Labradors and Vizslas are also both sociable and affectionate.

A Vizsla and Lab mix is likely to be a loving, high energy dog with strong prey drive thanks to their shared hunting and retrieving bloodlines.

They could be any of a number of colors ranging from dark brown, all the way to light brown or cream.

Also known as a Vizslador or a Labrala, the Vizsla Labrador cross is an example of a hybrid dog that is used as a working dog too.

The TSA often uses Vizsladors as detection dogs thanks to their great scent skills and one named Eebbers was voted their cutest canine in 2022.

2. Vizsla Beagle Mix

The Vizsla Beagle Mix is not as common as other Vizsla cross breeds, but is an interesting Vizsla Hound mix.

Both breeds are companionable, intelligent and loving and it is likely your Vizsla Beagle cross will be too.

With hunting bloodlines on both sides a Beagle Vizsla mix is likely to have a strong prey drive and hunting instincts. They would also tend to be high energy and need at least an hour a day of exercise.

There can be a wide range of colors including brown, white, black and tan and differences in size too from the small end of medium sized like a Beagle to a medium size like a Vizsla.

Also called a Veagle, you are likely to have a shorthaired dog with floppy large ears. Shedding will vary depending on whether they draw on the Vizsla or Beagle genes.

Note that Beagles were bred as scent hounds and can often be escape artists so it is essential to have a secure yard and train recall to ensure this pup doesn’t run off.

3. Vizsla Pit Mix

The Vizsla Pit mix most commonly refers to a mixed dog whose parents are Vizslas and American Staffordshire Terriers.

The breeds have quite different temperaments and sizes, so unless you are picking up an older rescue it is quite difficult to predict the size or personality of a Vizsla Staffy mix. But they are likely to be a medium sized dog.

What is similar is their shorthair so you can be confident you are taking on a low maintenance dog.

Also, both breeds are loyal, intelligent and energetic so training shouldn’t be too difficult and daily exercise is a must.

Staffys are more confident and stubborn than Vizslas but not as playful or as high energy as a Vizsla. So the mix really will vary with each individual pup.

4. Vizsla Weimaraner Mix

Two European hunting dogs combined into one sleek package, the Vizsla Weimaraner mix is a beautiful looking dog and similar breeds in many ways.

The cross is likely to be a medium to large size dog with a lean frame, athletic build and a short low maintenance coat.

Also known as a Vizmaraner or a Weisla, they often have a solid dark brown coat, but can have a mixed color coat too.

Vizslas and Weimaraners are both sensitive, loyal, affectionate and intelligent breeds who are also quite needy. Thankfully they are both highly trainable and eager to please their owners.

As a result you are likely to have a doting velcro companion dog on your hands with a Vizsla and Weimaraner mix.

Both dog breeds have hunting bloodlines so any mix will likely have a strong prey drive and high energy. An hour of daily exercise will be essential for these dogs.

As both breeds dislike time alone you may need to dedicate time managing separation anxiety and they may not be suited to homes where they will spend long days at home alone.

5. Vizsla Boxer Mix

The Vizsla Boxer mix dog is less common than some of the other Vizsla cross breeds on our list.

Like many other mixes, both these breeds are medium sized and shorthaired with a similar average height. You can be confident you are raising a low maintenance medium size dog with a Boxer Vizsla mix.

Both breeds are intelligent, playful, a little goofy and excellent with kids so you are sure to have a fun family dog with a Vizsla Boxer cross.

The Boxer’s habit of drooling may be an unwelcome addition to the mix, but will be forgiven thanks to their probable affectionate and loyal personality.

6. Vizsla Doberman Mix

The Vizsla Doberman mix, also known as a Vizslamann is a sleek and athletic Vizsla mixed breed.

Likely to be medium to large in size thanks to the Doberman’s larger size, they tend to have a mixed colored shorthaired coat ranging from light to dark brown.

Vizslas and Dobermans have a similar life expectancy and both are high energy working dogs. So expect to spend plenty of time outside exercising your Doberman Vizsla mix.

They are going to be pretty low maintenance in terms of grooming. And you may be surprised to know they both have affectionate and velcro dog personalities and will want to spend plenty of time by your side.

While both are intelligent and loyal, what might be less predictable is their emotional personality. They may be gentle and sensitive like the Vizsla or more alert and fearless like the Doberman.

7. Vizsla Poodle Mix (Vizsla Doodle)

Poodle mixes are all the rage so it is no surprise the Vizsla Poodle Mix is increasing in popularity.

The primary attraction to poodle mixes is to produce a hypoallergenic dog that doesn’t shed, but this isn’t guaranteed with any poodle cross breed.

Vizsla Doodle colors can vary a lot from cream to dark brown. Their coat could be anything from short to long and is likely to need regular grooming. They are likely to have large floppy ears too.

Vizslas and Standard Poodles are both highly intelligent, high energy and medium sized dogs. So you are likely to produce something very similar in a Vizsla Doodle.

The Vizsla poodle cross is a great choice for a family dog as they are affectionate, playful, highly trainable and kid-friendly.

Neither breed likes time alone, so there may be issues with separation anxiety with the Poodle Vizsla cross and may not be suitable for homes where all adults work full time.

8. Vizsla German Shepherd Mix

A Vizsla German Shepherd mix dog is likely to be a highly intelligent and hard working dog thanks to the genes of both its parents.

However while both breeds are intelligent, their temperaments are quite different so it will be difficult to predict their temperament when they are a puppy.

While Vizslas are sensitive and sociable, German Shepherds tend to be courageous and a little aloof. So it really could go either way with a Vizsla cross German Shepherd.

The coat will also vary from puppy to puppy. They may inherit the Vizsla low maintenance shorthaired coat, or the medium length double coat of the German Shepherd. The double coat will shed a lot more and require more frequent brushing and washing.

What is similar is their loyalty and commitment to their owners – so you can be confident you will have a loving companion dog with this mix.

9. Vizsla GSP Mix

The Vizsla GSP mix is one of the more common Vizsla mix breeds on our list.

Both dogs were bred as versatile close working hunting dogs, tracking similar sized game in a similar climate.

It was quite common for hunters in the 19th and early 20th century to cross breed dogs to enhance the hunting skills of their dogs.

Both the Vizsla and German Shorthaired Pointer were used by hunters in Central and Eastern Europe and cross breeds were not uncommon.

Their personalities are very similar – both breeds are loving, affectionate and loyal dogs who enjoy spending time with their owners and expect to be an integral part of the family.

The GSP is slightly more independent than the Vizsla but they are both more people focused than many other breeds and very easy to train.

You should plan to spend a lot of time exercising your Vizsla and GSP mix as they are high energy dogs with a strong prey drive and plenty of energy to burn.

The size of a Vizsla Pointer mix is likely to be medium, and they will have shorthair, but the thickness of the coat may vary as GSPs have an undercoat.

10. Vizsla Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix

The Vizsla Rhodesian Ridgeback mix is a bit of a mouthful to say but the mix produces a high energy and athletic dog with a low maintenance coat.

Likely to be medium to large in size, their similar coat colors are likely to result in a mid brown shorthaired coat like the purebred Vizslas and Ridgebacks.

They will have floppy large ears but may or may not have the trademark Rhodesian Ridgeback ridge!

Temperament in a Vizsla Ridgeback mix will vary between dogs. The Ridgeback is much more independent and a little more wary of strangers than the sociable velcro Vizsla.

They are likely to enjoy plenty of daily exercise and be a loyal and affectionate companion dog that will need plenty lot of training to ensure a well mannered dog.

11. Vizsla Border Collie Mix

The Vizsla Border Collie Mix is more unusual than other Vizsla mix dogs listed here and will have a lot of variation in puppy appearance and temperament.

What is similar is that both the Vizsla breed and Border Collie breed are intelligent, affectionate and energetic. They are also a similar size and weight, so you can be fairly certain you will have a medium sized dog.

As working dogs, both breeds are highly trainable and high energy. But they need not only physical exercise but mental challenge too as they get easily bored.

Canine sports like agility and obedience are perfect outlets for a Vizsla Collie mix.

What is different is their breeding purpose. Vizslas are bred to point and hunt, Border Collies to herd. So you may have a pointer or a herding dog!

Either way the Vizsla Collie cross is likely to be a fun loving and friendly family dog.

12. Vizsla Shepherd Mix

The Vizsla Shepherd Mix is an unusual mix and refers to Vizsla Australian Shepherd mix dogs.

As the Australian Shepherd has risen in popularity in recent years it is no surprise that we are starting to see Australian Shepherd Vizsla mixes.

Much like the Border Collie, Australian Shepherds are smart herding dogs. They are high energy and love to have a job.

So the Vizsla Shepherd mix can be quite an exuberant combination – a very high energy medium size dog with herding or hunting tendencies.

You will do best to have a job for these mixed breeds. Agility, dock diving or plenty of trick and skill training at home suit them perfectly.

Their coat will vary a lot and could be anything from short single to medium double coated.

Shepherds are less affectionate and needy than Vizslas, so there will be some variation in personality in these Vizsla mixes.
